Nowadays, basements have become a necessity due to the scarcity of space and fast rising property prices. Though, Basement should not be used for residential or living purposes, but it can be used for storage.
However, a vacant space under the house is considered inauspicious according to the vastu shastra, yet if the basement is constructed in a house it must follow some important vastu principles. If the basement is made in a house, it must comply with vastu rules.
Here are some of the vastu tips to be followed while constructing a basement-
1- According to the principles stated in the Vastu Shastra, basement should be built in Northern direction of the house.
2- East direction is another good option for the construction of a basement as there should be more space in east and north than south and west directions.
3- Basement should be used for non-residential or casual purpose. It can be used as a store room.
4- Place all the heavy items in the Southern and Western directions.
5- Keep the entrance door of the basement in the north or east direction.
6- Height of the basement must be at-least 9 feet or more.
7- Make the basement either square or rectangular.
8- At least one-fourth (1/4) of the floor to ceiling height should be above the ground.
9- There should be an adequate cross ventilation arrangement to make sure that there is sufficient sunlight and air coming into the house.
10- Keep the basement clean and tidy.
Basement Vastu – Things To Avoid-
1- As per vastu the south and west direction of the house must be more elevated and heavier than any other direction. Therefore, basement should never be constructed in the south and west zone or else it will lead to calamities.
2- Never built a basement in the Southwest zone at any cost. Basement in this zone can cause serious problems to your health and financial stability.
3- Vastu strictly prohibits the construction of a basement in the center of the premises (Brahmasthan).
4- Heavy electrical and metallic items should not be kept in the basement at all.
5- Do not use basement for living or any other recreational purpose.
6- North and the East zone of the basement should not be used to keep heavy items.
7- It’s a no brainer that light color reflects and dark color absorbs light and energy. Hence, light color and shades should be used for the basement.
Constructing basement, according to the guidelines stated in vastu shastra can produce good results for the residents. But, since it is a very sensitive issue, you must consult a vastu expert before the construction of the basement.
